Created in July 1999 when China Aerospace Corporation was divided into China Aerospace Science & Technology Corporation (CASC) and China Aerospace Machinery & Electronics Corporation (CAMEC); listed by the Japanese government as an entity of concern for missile proliferation; sanctioned by the U.S. in August 1993 (as China Aerospace Corporation) for missile proliferation activities; under the direct control of the State Council; institutional history dates from October 1956 with the creation of the Fifth Research Academy of the Ministry of National Defense; subsequent names included the Seventh Academy of Machine Building Industry, the Ministry of Astronautics Industry and the Ministry of Aerospace Industry; in December 1992, transferred approximately 24 M-11 missiles to Sargodha Air Force Base in Pakistan; from September 1994 to June 1996 transferred as many as 30 M-11 ballistic missiles to Sargodha; in June 1995, transferred possibly hundreds of missile guidance systems and computerized machine tools for the production of ballistic missiles to Iran; general design and production of launch vehicles, design and research of control systems, propulsion systems, computers and inertial guidance systems, ground facilities, aerodynamics study and materials processing; development of China's nuclear missiles; development of submarine-based strategic nuclear missiles, surface-to-surface tactical missiles, air defense missiles, and cruise missiles; modification of the Long March rockets and satellite launchers; development of liquid hydrogen and oxygen rocket boosters; owns 8 large comprehensive academies, 6 large- and medium-size enterprise groups and 17 large- and medium-size directly subordinated companies; oversees more than 300 factories, research institutes, companies and universities located throughout China; has complete systems for research, design, development, production and test of launch vehicles and missiles; total assets by the end of 1995 were 54.8 billion yuan; reportedly trained North Korean missile engineers.
