Sanctioned (with all successors, sub-units, or subsidiaries) by the United States on December 28, 2006, and on April 17, 2007, under the Iran and Syria Nonproliferation Act, which provides for penalties for the transfer to or acquisition from Iran since January 1, 1999, or the transfer to or acquisition from Syria since January 1, 2005, of equipment and technology controlled under multilateral export control lists or otherwise having the potential to make a material contribution to the development of weapons of mass destruction or cruise or ballistic missile systems; in each instance, the sanctions apply for two years as follows: U.S. government barred from procuring from, contracting with, or providing assistance to the entity, U.S. government sales to the entity of any item on the United States Munitions List prohibited, sales to the entity of any defense articles, defense services, or design and construction services under the U.S. Arms Export Control Act terminated, no new individual licenses granted for the transfer to the entity of items the export of which is controlled under the U.S. Export Administration Act of 1979 or the U.S. Export Administration Regulations, and any existing such licenses suspended; listed by the British government in 2007 as an entity of potential concern for WMD-related procurement; listed by the Japanese government in 2007 as an entity of concern for proliferation related to biological, chemical and nuclear weapons and missiles; listed in an annex to U.N. Security Council resolution 1737 of December 23, 2006, as an entity involved in Iran's proliferation-sensitive nuclear activities; listed as an entity of concern for proliferation in an early warning document distributed by the German government to industry in July 2005; sanctioned (along with sub-units and successors) by the United States in November 2000 for engaging in missile technology proliferation activities; identified by the British government in February 1998 as having procured goods and/or technology for weapons of mass destruction programs (specifically chemical, biological, nuclear and missile), in "addition to doing non-proliferation related business." A subordinate agency of the Iranian Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics (MODAFL) involved in proliferation-related procurement; according to the U.N. Security Council, some of its subordinates have been "involved in Iran's centrifuge program making components," and in Iran's missile program; composite rotors for the P-2 centrifuge manufactured in a workshop situated on a DIO site; several DIO workshops involved in the production of centrifuge components were visited by the International Atomic Energy Agency in 2004. Produces various defense equipment, including main battle tanks (MBTs), armored personnel vehicles (APVs), guns and gun-howitzers, multi-barrel rocket launchers, anti-tank missile weapon systems, small arms, ammunition from 100 mm up to 203 mm ranges, rifles, machine guns, short-, medium- and long-range missiles and rockets, chemical materials, nuclear/biological/chemical (NBC) protection equipment, and fast patrol boats; develops mines and explosives, including ammonium nitrate, ANFO, powder explosives, dynamite and fuses; established in 1924; according to the European Union, subsidiary Defence Technology and Science Research Centre (DTSRC - see separate entity record) handles much of the entity's procurement; subsidiary industry groups include the Armament Industries Group (AIG), Ammunition & Metallurgy Industries Group (AMIG), Chemical Industries & Development of Materials Group (CIDMG), Marine Industries Group (MIG), Special Industries Group (SIG), and Vehicle & Equipment Industries Group (VEIG); affiliated companies include Maham Ammunition Industries Group, PCF Chemical Industries Group, Kaveh Cutting Tools Complex, Banihashem Industries Complex, Isfahan Alloy Steel Complex, Yazd Brass Products, Khodrosazan Fath Industries, Research Institute of Vehicle's Science and Technology, and the Mechanical Industries Complex, which, according to the National Council of Resistance of Iran, manufactures bodies, parts and sub-systems for Shahab missiles. |
