DR. ASSEFI: THE EUROPEANS' PLAN IS NOT ACCEPTABLE

IRANIAN MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

August 6, 2005

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman, Dr Hamidreza Assefi, on Saturday said: The plan proposed by the Europeans on Iran`s nuclear dossier, is not acceptable in view of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Making the remarks in an interview with IRNA and `Shabakeh Khabar` ( Network of News) on the sidelines of the ceremony for taking oath of the new Iranian president, Dr Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, held at Majlis, Dr Assefi added: The plan proposed by the Europeans lacks the factors fulfilling Iran`s interests, and is against the spirit of NPT and Paris Agreement.

He stipulated: We will give complete answer to the said plan today or tomorrow, but it should be said that the Europe has neglected its duties and undertakings.

Dr Assefi mentioned the Europe`s failure to include the issue of uranium enrichment in the plan as one of the reasons for the plan`s non-acceptance on the part of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and said: As we have also announced previously, any plan to be proposed by the Europeans should consider the right of the Islamic Republic of Iran for uranium enrichment.

Referring to the issue announced by the Europeans that their plan contains minimum of proposals and not maximum, Dr Assefi said: It was better that the Europeans would announce the maximum and would not base their policy on procrastination. He meanwhile stipulated: We still are interested to continue negotiations with the Europeans.

As regards the Europeans` demand for holding of extraordinary meeting of the board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency ( IAEA) on Iran`s nuclear dossier, Dr Assefi said: The meeting lacks legal justification, and is intended for putting political pressure on Iran and waging psychological war on the Islamic Republic of Iran.
