STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY ON THE IRANIAN NUCLEAR ISSUE: U.S. PROPOSAL ON NEGOTIATIONS WITH IRAN

JAPANESE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

June 1, 2006

1. Japan supports the proposal of the United States that it will come to the table with the EU 3 countries and meet with the Iranian representatives, as soon as Iran fully and verifiably suspends its enrichment and reprocessing activities.

2. Since it is essential for the international society as a whole to address the Iranian nuclear issue in a resolute manner, Japan is determined to continue playing a fair role in close consultation with the parties concerned.

3. Japan reiterates its strong expectation that Iran will appropriately respond to this issue for its peaceful and diplomatic solution.
