| Established in 1722 by the Russian Navy on the Izhora River as a sawmill; one of Russia's leading metallurgical and machine-building enterprises with 20 separate plants and departments; one of three major builders of nuclear reactors in the former Soviet Union, and makes heavy machinery and numerous other products for both the military and civilian sectors; main facility, located in the St. Petersburg suburb of Kolpino, consisted in 1991 of four large divisions and one smaller division; a foreign trade firm was created in 1987 to market the firm's products in international markets, and the firm currently exports to more than 20 countries; military products include nuclear reactors for submarines, titanium for submarine hulls, armor, armored vehicle hulls, tank turrets and tank track wheel assemblies; manufacture of 300 varieties of steel castings, propeller shafts, excavators, reactors, generators and other equipment for nuclear power stations, turbine and turbine generator sets and rotors; maintains facilities for hammer forging and pressing, rolling steel pipes and plates, electroplating, thermal treating, and vacuum welding of hard alloys and steel; since the late 1980s, has been part of the St. Petersburg Energomash Energy Corporation, a State Interbranch Production Association (GMPO) that consolidates as many as 15 enterprises in the field of power equipment, including nuclear reactor production facilities; production of a large quantity of equipment for the Bushehr reactor in Iran, including the reactor vessel and the steam generator casing, to be delivered at the end of 2001; supplying primary circuit equipment for Bushehr; reportedly supplying 1000-megawatt reactors for the Lianyungang nuclear power project in China, as well as other equipment for the project, including pressure compensators, pipework, hydraulic equipment for the reactors' concrete shafts, hydraulic accumulators for the backup cooling system for the reactor fuel core, steam generators housings and a system to handle new and spent nuclear fuel; reportedly slated to build two reactors for the Kudankulam nuclear power project in India. - Central Laboratory: Research on metallurgical and casting production and development of new steel grades and processes; research on steel melting processes, ingot casting, rolling processes, and heat treatment of steels and alloys. - Joint Design Bureau: Designs equipment for reactors for nuclear power plants, and large-size steel and concrete casks for transport of spent nuclear fuel and wastes; design of vessels and high pressure equipment for petrochemical, chemical and gas processing industries, heavy equipment for metallurgical plants, casting, and forging facilities; design of water supply systems for thermal power stations and nuclear power plants. |
