On the afternoon of January 4, 2007, Chinese State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan met with Special Envoy of Iranian Supreme Leader and President & Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani at Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. Both sides exchanged views on bilateral ties and the Iranian nuclear issue.
China pursues a good-neighborly and friendly foreign policy of "treating its neighbors well and as partners" and values relations with Iran, said Tang, adding that the closer exchanges and cooperation between the two countries conform to the common aspiration and fundamental interests of the two countries and their peoples. The development of bilateral relations is aimed at promoting common development and prosperity of both countries and contributing to peace, stability and development in the region and the world at large.
"The UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1737, which reflects the concerns of the international community about safeguarding non-proliferation," said Tang. "China has always maintained that dialogue and negotiations are the best way to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue," Tang said. "Under the current circumstances, it has become more necessary and pressing to resume the negotiations," said Tang, adding China hopes all sides will show flexibility and create conditions for resuming the negotiations as soon as possible to seek a comprehensive and peaceful solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.
Larijani expressed his satisfaction with the friendly cooperative relations between the two countries, saying that he hoped to see closer consultations and cooperation between both sides in bilateral and regional affairs.
Larijani introduced Iran's position on the nuclear issue and said he appreciated China's efforts in pushing for a peaceful solution to the nuclear issue through negotiations. Larijani said in the current context, Iran will still honor the principles of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and continue to seek a just and reasonable solution to the Iranian nuclear issue through talks.
