Press Spokesman for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry stated that Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit received Iranian Secretary-General of the Supreme National Security Council and Chief Negotiator for the Iranian Nuclear file, Ali Larijani, on 10 and 11 June 2006 .
The Spokesman stated that the meeting dealt with the recent developments in the Iranian Nuclear file in light of the suggestions made by EU High Representative for the Common Security and Security Policy, Javier Solana following his recent visit to Tehran , which the Iranian side is currently studying.
The Egyptian Foreign Minister, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, emphasized the importance of supporting the efforts currently being exerted to reach a diplomatic settlement to the Iranian nuclear issue. He also asserted the need to reach a solution that meets Iran's needs and puts an end to any doubts regarding its nuclear program.
The Spokesman stated that discussing Iran's nuclear dossier took up most of the meeting and Egypt reiterated its call for freeing the Middle East from weapons of mass destruction but, on the other hand, acknowledged the right of all countries to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. The Iranian side asserted its keenness on solving this issue through constructive negotiations.
