IRAN/NUCLEAR PROGRAM

Q - Could you give us specific details about the results of the meeting of EU officials in Paris on the Iranian nuclear question? Have the EU3 decided to ask the IAEA to refer Iran to the Security Council?

There was a meeting in Paris yesterday between the British, French and German political directors. The purpose of the contacts was for the three Europeans to review the various aspects of the Iranian nuclear question, especially as EU foreign ministers hold their informal meeting (Gymnich) September 1 and 2.

As you also know, IAEA Director General Mr. ElBaradei will submit his report to the IAEA board on September 3, and a meeting of the board of governors is due to be held on September 19.

For the rest, our position is well-known. It was restated by the president on Monday at the ambassadors' conference. We would like Iran to resume its commitment to suspend activities linked to the production of fissile material in accordance with what the Paris Agreement requires. In this context we invite Iran to demonstrate a sense of responsibility to restore cooperation and confidence, failing which the Security Council will have no other option but to take up the question.
