Ministry Spokesperson Reads Statement by Douste-Blazy on Iran's Announcement on Commissioning of Centrifuges

I'll now read you a statement by the Foreign Minister, M. Philippe Douste-Blazy, on the Iranian nuclear issue:

"The Iranian authorities' announcement of the commissioning of 164 centrifuges is worrying. We are waiting for the information which Mr ElBaradei will bring back from his mission in Iran.

If this announcement were confirmed, it would run directly contrary to the repeated demands of the IAEA and the United Nations Security Council.

Once again, I firmly urge Iran to suspend her dangerous activities in order to restore a relationship of confidence with the international community."

Q. - What is your reaction to Tehran's declarations on the Iranian nuclear programme. Do they increase the likelihood of international sanctions? Do you think it necessary to convene an urgent meeting of the Security Council, or do you think we have to wait for the deadline of 28 April given to Iran?

I refer you to the statement by the Foreign Minister, M. Philippe Douste-Blazy, which I have just read to you. As for your second question, it's for the United Nations Security Council to decide on any measures to be taken in the light of the information given to it by M. ElBaradei.

As for the last point you raise, we shall be consulting with partners on any measures to be taken following Mr ElBaradei's mission, in the light of the information he has obtained.
