Weapon Program:
- Nuclear
A- You've actually asked a lot of questions about Iran. First, remember what I said earlier about Mr. Goulard's visit to Iran. It's one element to be borne in mind. As far as the IAEA is concerned, the board of governors, which met at the beginning of the week, unanimously adopted a resolution a few hours ago on Iran's nuclear proliferation. I think that for us what we noted particularly in this, and I'm basing what I say on the explanation of vote given by our representative to the IAEA board is that "the developments concerning Iran's nuclear activities reveal both progress and persisting reasons for concern, all of which is reflected in the resolution we have just adopted." You mentioned the matter of the People's Mujahadin of Iran. I've no particular comment on the demonstration announced by the mayor of Auvers-sur-Oise in accordance with current procedures. For further details on the demonstration, I refer you to the Ministry of the Interior. You remember the context for what happened last year, that is, on June 17, 2003 when the police took in for questioning 165 member of this organization in the Paris region as part of a judicial procedure which was begun for criminal association with a view to preparing terrorist acts. At that time the police seized a large amount of money, computers and related equipment. Proceedings have been started against several members of the organization. These are following the normal course. I've no comment other than to remind you that the MPOI is on Europe's list of terrorist organizations and France is combating terrorism with the greatest resolve while respecting the laws of the French Republic.
Q - For France what is the next step that Iran has to make now? Is it a gesture from the Iranian authorities to cooperate? Or other intermediary steps?
A- It seems at this point that everything is about to enter a critical phase, especially with regard to the work of the IAEA since the agency is going to analyze all the statements made by Iran under its additional protocol to the NPT. We expect the Iranian authorities to apply all the resolutions, keep their commitments and cooperate with the Agency without reservations. We hope that the board will quickly reach its conclusions in this matter in the coming months, and if possible before the end of the year.
Q - Are you expressly demanding ratification of the additional agreement?
A- Teheran has signed it, is implementing it but hasn't ratified it yet. It is even better to complete the process by starting ratification.
