German government concerned at the revelation of a second Iranian uranium enrichment plant

Iran is building a second uranium enrichment facility. "We are concerned and expect the matter to be clarified as swiftly as possible," said Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is currently attending the G20 Summit in Pittsburgh. The construction of a second facility of this sort is in contravention of the conditions laid down by the International Atomic Energy Agency and the United Nations.

Iran has now only revealed the second uranium enrichment plant, "because the Iranians had the impression that its existence has already been discovered," Angela Merkel stated. She called on Iran to provide the International Atomic Energy Agency with all the pertinent information as rapidly as possible.

The Chancellor expects Iran to provide comprehensive information during the talks scheduled for 1 October relating to its nuclear programme. The country must also respond to proposals submitted some time ago of how to resolve the problem of its nuclear programme.

To date Iran has admitted to having only one uranium enrichment facility at Natans.
