Iran still a threat

With regard to the Iranian nuclear weapons programme, Chancellor Merkel sees no cause to relax vigilance. The Iranian President's remarks on Israel were totally unacceptable, she said. Nor is Tehran fully cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency on the matter of uranium enrichment, said Merkel.

Merkel therefore called for a continuation of Europe's existing approach. The door was still open for talks with the Iranian leadership, she noted, but the country must fully cooperate in return. Merkel made clear that the UN process must continue to be rigorously pursued.
