Weapon Program:
- Nuclear
Talking to reporters after the IAEA Governing Council meeting, Moussavian said the just issued resolution by the IAEA Governing Council on Iran is more positive than the previous resolutions. He said the resolution does not include any comments on the deviation of the Iranian nuclear programs to military channels or issues such as the P2 which in the previous resolution resulted in deep controversy in the world.
He noted that the just adopted resolution includes comments on the good cooperation between the Iranian government and the UN nuclear watchdog as well as comments on Iran`s good will gesture to offer its nuclear sites to the UN arms inspectors on short-notice or strap inspections.
He said the letter addressed by President Mohammad Khatami had very good results and changed the wording of the UN nuclear watchdog resolution on the suspension of the heavy-water project of Arak and UCF project.
He went on to say that the ambiguities on the P2 centrifuges are also being dealt with in cooperation between Iran and the IAEA. Despite the fact that the IAEA should have acted in a way to close the Iran dossier on the nuclear issue, the IAEA`s refusal to refer the Iran case to the UN Security Council was a big diplomatic failure for the US authorities.
The stance adopted by Iran on the issue has even pushed the EU leaders to call for closer ties with the Islamic Republic, he noted. The comments followed a move by the leaders of the 25-member EU to call for closer relations between Iran and the bloc in a time that the US authorities use every possible means to pressurize the Islamic Republic to drop its nuclear program.
In its final conclusion on Iran the EU summit stressed the EU`s desire to move towards a closer relationship with Iran, on the basis of action by Iran to address the EU`s concerns regarding its nuclear program, fight against terrorism, human rights and Iran`s approach to the Middle East Peace Process.
The United States accuses that Iran`s peaceful nuclear activities are a cover to build atomic bombs. Tehran says its nuclear program is in accordance with the country`s bid to produce 7,000 megawatts of electricity in the next 20 years, when the country`s oil and gas reserves become overstretched. Tehran announced earlier its voluntary suspension of uranium enrichment activities as a goodwill gesture as well as signed an additional protocol to NPT for snap inspections of its nuclear facilities but said it would not stop efforts to gain access to peaceful nuclear technology.
