Moscow, April 22, IRNA -- Head of Russian Atomic Energy Agency Alexander Rumyantsev said here Thursday that Russia is considering building the second phase of the Bushehr nuclear power plant.

Speaking to Interfax news agency, he added that the unit could be operational for up to 60 years using the "vvr-1500" reactor.

He said Iran has previously asked Moscow to prolong the operational life of the power plant by using the "vvr-1000" reactor.

Although, he added, that implementing the plan needs further research and designs in Bushehr nuclear power plant.

Earlier in April, Russian Nuclear Energy Agency announced that Moscow adheres to its commitments towards Tehran in completing the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant project.

Asked to comment on the US congress` call on Moscow to stop nuclear cooperation with Tehran, the agency`s spokesman Nikolai Shingarev said that considering its political nature, any comment on or interpretation of the issue rest with Russian foreign affairs ministry.

"On behalf of Russian Federation`s Nuclear Energy Agency should emphasize that we abide by our international commitments," said Shingarev.

Shingarev said that only certain political decisions may reverse the process. He said the decisions, however, need to be backed by certain solid proofs in order to be taken into consideration.

He quoted Rumyantsev as saying that there had been no proof or evidence at hand to substantiate allegation that Iran intends to produce nuclear arms.

Shingarev reiterated that there is no reliable evidence available to point Iran`s nuclear program is for military purposes.
