April 6, 2004

Iranian foreign minister, Dr Kamal Kharrazi, on Tuesday in a meeting with the visiting chief of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mohammed al-Baradei, said: Islamic Republic of Iran is making effort towards reinforcing confidence, and confidence-building is a two-way road.

One cannot expect only from one side to build confidence, he added.

While emphasizing on the importance of independent role of the Agency in offering relevant reports, Dr Kharrazi stressed on peaceful nature of Iran`s nuclear activities and said: As we have announced time and again, the nature and dimensions of Iran`s nuclear activities are peaceful, and we have no doubt that the Agency will come to the definite conclusion that the Islamic Republic`s nuclear programs are merely for peaceful purposes.

Pointing to the trend of Iran`s case and its transparent cooperation with the Agency, Dr Kharrazi said: Aggrandizing trivial matters and politicizing the issue has complicated settlement of the technical issue.

While emphasizing on continuation of constructive and mutual cooperation between Iran and the Agency, he stipulated: The Islamic Republic of Iran expects that the Agency take into consideration the cooperative spirit of Iran as a serious criterion and that such a trend would become a normal one in the near future, in order that the Islamic Republic of Iran could benefit from all its rights on the basis of Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

At the meeting , Mr Al-Baradei, while evaluating as positive the progress made in cooperation observed on the part of Iran towards the inspections made by the Agency, assessed the continuation of cooperation, in expert and technical atmosphere, as positive.
