The United States is Pursuing its Own Political Objectives in the Middle East, Remarks by Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi

February 22, 2005

Iranian foreign minister, Dr Kamal Kharrazi, Tuesday evening, upon his arrival in Iran, from India, told IRNA reporter: The US, by insisting on pullout of Syrian forces from Lebanon, is only pursuing its own political objectives in the Middle East region.

He added: At present a balance has been created in the Middle East, which is not to the benefit of the Zionist regime.

He recalled: The Americans are putting pressure on Syria for pullout of the country`s forces ( from Lebanon), just to secure the interests of Israel.

He however pointed out: On the basis of the agreement between Syria and Lebanon, Syrian forces have presence in Lebanon, in a bid to provide the country with due security.

He further said: It is the Lebanese authorities that should decide for pullout of Syrian forces from that country; and the insistence of the US and some European countries in this regard , is considered as interference in the internal affairs of Lebanon.

Pointing out that Lebanon and Syria, united with each other, have withstood Israel, Dr Kharrazi emphasized that the US is making effort to disgrace and dishonor the Lebanese people.

The Lebanese people steadfastly defended their land against Israel, and this steadfastness is considered as an advantage for Lebanon, he added.

Stressing the need for establishment of national unity in Lebanon, Dr Kharrazi said: The Lebanese people should be careful not to be entrapped by aliens, who are pursuing their political objectives under the veil of attractive words; and only think of unity and freedom of their country.

Elsewhere in his remarks, in response to the recent statements made by Belgian foreign minister, who has accused Iran of producing nuclear weapons, Dr Kharrazi said: Belgian foreign minister who has been recently appointed to the post, should be provided with new information.

Emphasizing on the issue that Iran has never been after developing nuclear weapons, Dr Kharrazi stipulated that without offering any document, one should not repeat the US claim.

He pointed out that Iranian foreign ministry soon will send a response to he Belgian government in this connection.

Dr Kharrazi described Iran`s nuclear activity as peaceful and said: The Americans have made the accusations against Iran, while having taken the accusations for granted.

The American authorities, by adopting arrogant stance, want the other countries to obey them, he added.

Dr Kharrazi stressed: The US should prove its accusations against the Islamic Republic of Iran, based on the claim that the country is seeking to develop nuclear weapons.

He continued: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which has the responsibility to supervise on nuclear activity of Iran, has time and again announced that there exists no document to prove that Iran intends to produce nuclear arms. The US is only trying to increase its political pressures on Iran.

As regards the trend of the talks between the Islamic Republic and the three European countries( France, Britain and Germany), Dr Kharrazi said: According to the agreement reached between Iran and the three European countries, suspension of uranium enrichment has been accomplished voluntarily and temporarily.

He explained: According to the agreements, with the expansion of Iran` relations with the three European countries, and fulfillment of commitments and confidence building, If there exist any concern on the possibility of Iran`s deviation from its commitments to IAEA, they will be removed.

Dr Kharrazi pointed out: The Islamic Republic of Iran also should be assured that the Europeans are taking serious steps to fulfil their commitments based on transfer of technology, investment, and guaranteeing Iran`s security.

It is not halting the program of enriching uranium that eliminates the concerns, but it is commitment to undertakings that will lead to removal of concerns, he stressed.

He further said: Iran`s program of enriching uranium is only in the framework of producing the fuel for nuclear energy, and the country never transcends this framework.

Dr Kharrazi expressed hope that at the end of negotiations between Iran and the three European countries, the existing concerns would be eliminated and deep and mutual confidence would be created.
