On July 31 (Mon) New York time, the United Nations Security Council adopted resolution 1696, demanding that Iran shall suspend all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities. Japan highly values this adoption as demonstrating the determined stance of the international community toward Iran's nuclear issue and as an important step in resolving the issue by diplomatic means.

Japan strongly hopes that Iran will accept the comprehensive proposals presented by the countries including the EU3 as soon as possible and return to the negotiation process after having fulfilled the requirements of the UNSC resolution, including the suspension of all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities. Japan intends to seize every opportunity to urge Iran for that purpose.
