Dr. Mehdi Safari, Deputy Foreign Minister of Iran visited Islamabad on 28 th August 2006 . He called on Foreign Minister Mr. Khurshid M. Kasuri and Foreign Secretary Mr. Riaz Mohammad Khan to discuss bilateral relations between the two countries. Both sides agreed that the decisions already taken to enhance bilateral trade and to strengthen economic ties between the two neighbouring countries had laid a foundation towards this objective and that steps for further implementation would be carried out.

The Deputy Foreign Minister also briefed the Foreign Minister and the Foreign Secretary on Iran 's response to the P5+1 package which had been offered to Iran on the nuclear issue. He stressed that while Iran would not accept preconditions, they were open to discuss all issues with a view towards their resolution through negotiations.

The Foreign Minister and the Foreign Secretary reiterated Pakistan 's principled position on this issue that all parties should adhere to their international obligations and their rights should also be respected. Pakistan had always supported negotiations for a peaceful resolution. Pakistan was against any coercive measures or the use of force which would only endanger regional security and stability.
