Question: How can the Foreign Ministry comment on the fact that Iran has formally notified the IAEA that it will begin upgrading its low-enriched uranium to 20 percent?
Answer: We are, of course, disappointed that Tehran has not given diplomacy the chance to put in some work in order to find a formula for implementing the IAEA-proposed scheme to ship out its stock of low-enriched uranium to produce fuel for the Tehran Research Reactor (TRR) that would suit all parties. We are convinced that the further exploration of possible ways to implement this project would enable reaching the common denominator in the near future. This would constitute a substantial step in restoring confidence in the exclusively peaceful nature of the Iranian nuclear program, creating the necessary atmosphere of trust for the beginning of dialogue.
But Iran's decision to start the 20 percent enrichment not only runs counter to the provisions of the UN Security Council resolutions and IAEA Board of Governors decisions adopted with regard to it, but also exacerbates doubts about the sincerity of the intentions of Iran by joint efforts to seek to dispel concerns of the international community over the Iranian nuclear program.
