Statement by South African Government Following Meeting with Acting Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mehdi Mostafavi

January 18, 2006

Weapon Program:

  • Nuclear

The South African Government has noted recent developments related to the Iranian nuclear programme. We appeal to all parties involved to refrain from any action that could further increase tension and confrontation.

South Africa continues to consult with the concerned governments and Members of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors to find concrete workable proposals that can assist in resolving this matter in a sustainable manner. It is in this context that Deputy Minister Aziz Pahad today met with the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran, Mr Mehdi Mostafavi.

South Africa will continue to work in the context of the IAEA and within the framework of the Nuclear-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) towards finding a solution.

South Africa believes that there is no alternative to continuing dialogue and negotiations to reach a long-term agreement that takes due consideration of the rights, obligations, concerns and aspirations of all parties involved.
