Over the last several weeks, the international community and the United States have significantly enhanced our ability to apply financial pressure on Iran and obstruct its ability to further develop its nuclear capabilities. In particular, new sanctions adopted by the United Nations, United States, and allies such as the European Union (EU), Canada, and Australia highlight Iran’s increasing isolation from the international community. These new sanctions build upon the foundation established by previous laws, UN Security Council Resolutions (UNSCRs) and other international instruments, and give us new and powerful tools. These new tools will enable us, acting in concert with partner nations and the private sector, to increase the financial pressure on Iran and further protect the international financial system from Iranian abuse.
