On May 21, 2020, Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu spoke at request with Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi of Iran on the phone, exchanging views on the Iranian nuclear issue.

Ma Zhaoxu noted, the Iranian nuclear issue constitutes an important part in China-Iran strategic cooperation. On this issue, the Chinese side has always upheld the political settlement, adhered to promoting peace talks and stuck to implementing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Understanding the Iranian side's concerns on implementing the JCPOA, the Chinese sides opposes the attempts to undermine the JCPOA, and supports all relevant parties in following the step-by-step and reciprocal approach to reach a full and effective implementation plan of the JCPOA at an early date. The Chinese side hopes that the Iranian side and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) could continue to enhance dialogue and cooperation to address related issues in a proper manner. The Chinese side is willing to continue to play a constructive role in this regard.

Abbas Araghchi spoke highly of the Chinese side's adherence to an objective and impartial position, its firm support for the JCPOA and its efforts to promote the political and diplomatic settlement of the Iranian nuclear issue. The Iranian side will remain committed to safeguarding and implementing the JCPOA, strengthen cooperation with the IAEA and maintain close communication with the Chinese side.
