On September 24, 2018 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif of Iran on the sidelines of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York.
Wang Yi first expressed strong condemnation to the recent terrorist attack in Iran, and paid condolences to the victims of the incident.
Wang Yi noted that the Iranian nuclear issue is a focus of all parties at the UN General Assembly. The Chinese side supports the Iranian side in maintaining its legitimate rights and interests, opposes unilateralism and hegemony, and advocates safeguarding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear issue. The Chinese side encourages all parties to take the right stance and send out the right signal. We are glad to see that the International Atomic Energy Agency recognizes Iran in fulfilling obligations in the field of the JCPOA. It conforms to Iran's own interests to continue implementing the JCPOA on the Iranian nuclear issue.
Mohammad Javad Zarif spoke positively of the important role the Chinese side has played in maintaining the JCPOA on the Iranian nuclear issue. He expressed that Iran attaches importance to Iran-China relations, and appreciates that the Chinese side has been committed to promoting bilateral economic and trade cooperation. The Iranian side believes that most members of the international community will continue supporting the JCPOA on the Iranian nuclear issue. The Iranian side is willing to maintain communication with all parties including the Chinese side on safeguarding and implementing the JCPOA to jointly deal with the current situation in a proper manner.
