Supreme Leader Responds to President Rouhani's Letter on JCPOA

January 19, 2016

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, in response to the letter from President Hassan Rouhani about the conclusion of nuclear talks, has expressed satisfaction with the fruition of the Iranian nation’s resistance against unjust sanctions, and the opposite sides’ backtracking on their positions thanks to efforts made by Iranian nuclear scientists and endeavors by all those involved in the nuclear talks. Ayatollah Khamenei has highlighted five important points addressed to President Rouhani in this regard.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful
His Excellency Dr. Rouhani
Esteemed President of the Islamic Republic of Iran
My warmest greetings,

I hereby express my satisfaction [with the fact] that the resistance of the great nation of Iran in the face of unjust sanctions, and the effort of [our] nuclear scientists in advancing this important industry, as well as the indefatigable endeavor of [nuclear] negotiators finally forced the opposite parties – some of whom have gained fame for their enmity with the Iranian nation – to back down [from their positions] and lift part of those bullying sanctions, and I offer my gratitude to Your Excellency and the negotiating team, particularly the esteemed Minister [of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif], [and] all those involved [in nuclear talks]. For the time being, I draw your attention to the following points:

Firstly, care must be exercised that the opposite party would fulfill its obligations in full. Remarks made by certain American politicians during the past couple of days are totally a cause for suspicion.

Secondly, all government officials must be notified that the resolution of the country’s economic problems depends on relentless and wise efforts in all sectors with a view to the Economy of Resistance and that the lifting of sanctions on its own is not enough to bring about improvement in the country’s economy and [facilitate] people’s livelihood.

Thirdly, in publicities, it must be noted that heavy costs have been suffered in return for what has been achieved under this deal. Writings and remarks that try to ignore this fact and pretend to be grateful to the Western side are not treating the nation’s public opinion with honesty.

Fourthly, even this amount of success in the face of the arrogant and bullying front has been achieved as a result of resistance and steadfastness. We must all consider this as a great lesson applying to all issues and incidents in the Islamic Republic.

Fifthly, I reiterate once more that the treachery and [the possible] breach of promise by arrogant states, the US in particular, in this issue and other issues must not be neglected.

I pray to Almighty God to bestow success upon Your Excellency and other state officials.

Seyyed Ali Khamenei
