Comment for the Mass Media by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov Summarizing His Participation in the Talks on Iran’s Nuclear Programme

Weapon Program:

  • Nuclear

We have conducted very specific and long negotiations. But it was time well spent. Everybody agrees that we have grounds for joint work to collectively determine the parameters of the solution to Iran’s nuclear problem on the basis of the requirements included in the decisions of the IAEA, its Board of Governors and UNSC resolutions.

We agreed to continue negotiations – political directors will do this. The ministers agreed – and it is a general opinion of members of the EU3+3 and the head of Iran’s MFA – that the work will be conducted on the basis of the superposition and reciprocity principle. This principle has been advanced by the Russian party for a long time, and now it is taken as a basis for the work, which will be conducted when preparing a joint document of the EU3+3 and Iran. I will emphasise again: our final goal is to ensure full implementation of the UNSC and IAEA decisions.

I would like to note the leading role played by the US delegation headed by John Kerry to advance the approaches, which are acceptable for Iran. We think that it is especially important at the current stage. Of course, we have not managed to agree on all the details, but we see a disposition towards constructive work. I think that the date of the next meeting of political directors, who will work on the joint document, will be announced in the nearest future.
