Remarks by Secretary Lavrov on Iran's Centrifuge Advancements

January 31, 2013

Weapon Program:

  • Nuclear

Question: It is reported that Iran is building new centrifuges and will be able to enrich uranium faster and in bigger volumes. Is that true?

S.V. Lavrov: Not quite. According to information we have received from IAEA, Iran stated that it will install next generation centrifuges.

Question: Does this arouse concern in Russia?

S.V. Lavrov: In principle, Teheran is requested to freeze the enrichment works before a result is obtained at negotiations. Concerning the logistical aspects – they are doing everything according to their obligations as part of the Agreement with IAEA on guarantees with regard to NPT: IAEA is informed and it will be present and will observe this. The political and legal aspects of a case are that, we together with other UN Security Council member countries, have called upon Iran not to expand these enrichment works during negotiations until a result is obtained. Thus we are still studying this statement and will see how it all looks as a whole.
