The Council Expresses Concern About Iran's Nuclear Activities and Human Rights Situation

EU Council
September 13, 2004

The Council discussed Iran. It values and supports the efforts of the United Kingdom, France and Germany vis-a-vis Teheran regarding nuclear activities to bring about a satisfactory resolution.

Iran should co-operate fully with the IAEA to restore the confidence of the international community that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only. Iran should be aware of the international community's sensitivities with regard to its intentions.

Complete suspension of Iran's enrichment activities is needed. These enrichment activities must be stopped. If that condition is met, the EU stands ready to engage in further contacts with the Iranian government.

Furthermore, the EU is convinced that the human rights situation in Iran has deteriorated. It has decided to co-sponsor a Canadian resolution on human rights in the UN.
