There have been a number of recent news stories containing misleading information about how the IAEA safeguards system works. In particular, there is lack of understanding when it comes to the respective rights and obligations of both a State and the IAEA and the process of designating inspectors to carry out verification activities in a country.
The IAEA´s ability to perform its inspection activities in Iran in accordance with Iran´s Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement has not changed. There are currently a sufficient number of inspectors (more than 200) designated for Iran.
The Director General will continue to report periodically to the IAEA Board of Governors on the status of verification activities in Iran.
