An air attack on Iran by Israel or U.S. forces would be aimed at setting back Iran’s nuclear program by at least five years. A ground offensive to terminate the regime is not feasible given other commitments in Iraq and Afghanistan. Though such attacks would severely damage Iran’s nuclear and missile programs Iran would still retain the capability to resume such activities over a longer timeline. Thus an initial attack would only set in motion a long-lasting confrontation.
