On the afternoon of September 14, 2007, Chinese State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan met with visiting Special Envoy of the Iranian Government Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi, who is also Iranian Interior Minister, exchanging views on Iran's nuclear issue.
During the meeting, Tang said that China attaches importance to ties with Iran. To further strengthen bilateral multi-level exchanges and cooperation in all fields is an effort not only to develop the country itself, but also to create more favorable neighboring and international environments for the country's long-term development. It conforms to common interests of both sides and is also beneficial to peace, stability and development of the region and the world at large, added Tang.
On the Iranian nuclear issue, Tang said China would continue to play a constructive role on the issue to safeguard the international nuclear non-proliferation system and resolve the issue through diplomatic negotiation. China would back Iran's efforts to develop cooperation with the IAEA, calling for the parties involved to positively respond to international concerns with a pragmatic and flexible attitude and make efforts to ease the tension and prevent the situation from further worsening.
Pour-Mohammadi said Iran attaches great importance to ties with China and is willing to further strengthen exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in all areas. The working plan reached by Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the outstanding issues shows the willingness of the Iranian side to maintain cooperation with IAEA, he said, expressing hope that all parties concerned will show support.
