Dr. Kharrazi's Meeting with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan

Iranian foreign minister, Dr Kamal Kharrazi, on Thursday in New York met and conferred with the United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annan. At the meeting held on the sidelines of the Nuclear Non- proliferation Treaty (NPT) review conference, the two sides talked and exchanged views on restructuring in the United Nations , the current NPT review conference, nuclear talks between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Three European countries (Germany, France and Britain) as well as the development in the region.

Talking of the restructuring of the UN, including the issue of increasing the number of permanent members of the Security Council of the UN, Dr Kharrazi emphasized on the status and the role of the developing countries and inclusion of their viewpoints in the trend of restructuring.

Dr Kharrazi also referred to Iran`s views on the aforementioned conference , and the results of the 1995 and 2000 conferences, and said: In reviewing Nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty, no new discrimination against non-nuclear countries is acceptable.

He stressed the need for taking practical steps towards global disarmament the NPT review conference.

As regards nuclear negotiations between Iran and the three big European countries, Dr Kharrazi said: Iran`s proposals have been to give objective guarantees , and suspension of any activity is not regarded as objective guarantee.

Announcing that the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready for negotiations, Dr Kharrazi stipulated: We do not want negotiations as ultimate aim of the talks. We should feel tangible progress in the talks and come up with a result.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Dr Kharrazi elaborated on the stance and views of the Islamic Republic of Iran on regional developments.

In this context he expressed satisfaction over the formation of government in Lebanon and existence of coordination among different Lebanese groups and emphasized: Lebanon`s Hizbullah is the symbol of resistance of the country against the Zionist occupiers; and Lebanon`s resistance belongs to the people of the country.
