Former Chairmen and Managing Directors Dr. Y. S. R. Prasad and Shri Ch. Surendar were both sanctioned by the United States on September 23, 2004 for violating the Iran Nonproliferation Act of 2000 by transferring to Iran equipment and/or technology of proliferation significance since January 1, 1999; sanctioned by the United States in November 1998 for being "involved in nuclear or missile activities;" sanctions removed in October 2001, but this organization may remain on the U.S. "Entity List"; identified by the British government in February 1998 as having procured goods and/or technology for weapons of mass destruction programs, in "addition to doing non-proliferation related business."
Operates the following nuclear power plants Tarapur Atomic Power Station Units 1 and 2 (TAPS-1 and 2) in Maharashtra, Rajasthan Atomic Power Station Units 2-4 (RAPS-2, 3 and 4) in Rajasthan, Madras Atomic Power Station Units 1 and 2 (MAPS-1 and 2) in Tamil Nadu, Narora Atomic Power Station Units 1 and 2 (NAPS-1 and 2) in Uttar Pradesh (UP), Kakrapar Atomic Station Units 1 and 2 (KAPS-1 and 2) in Gujarat and Kaiga Atomic Power Station (Kaiga-1 and 2) in Karnataka; only RAPS and TAPS are subject to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspection.
Overseeing construction of the following nuclear power plants 2 Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) units at Tarapur, Maharashtra, 2 PHWR units at Kota, Rajasthan, 2 PHWR units at Kaiga, Karnataka and 2 Light Water Reactor (LWR, VVER) units at Kudankulam, Tamil Nadu; collaborating with Russian organization AtomStroyExport ('Atomstroy Export') on the Kudankulam power station; manages development of India's Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR); setting up a dedicated R and D center at TAPP-3 and 4 to meet needs of nuclear power plants (NPPs).
